The famous Niagara Falls are located about 2 hours by train from Toronto, as you say it is a must when you come out for a few days!
A little geography first: the "Niagara Falls" are in the middle of the Niagara River that connects Lake Ontario to Lake Erie. The Niagara River forms the border between Canada and the United States of America.
These are the most powerful waterfalls in North America at a rate of more than 2800 m3 / s, a priori there are three separate falls, but to be quite honest I've only seen two (American Falls and Horseshoe Falls) ...
We've been enjoying the falls twice, the first time in the company of Jannick in November 2012 (and it was cold and we were almost alone on the site) and the second in the month of April 2013 with the family of Benedict (and it was hot and there were lots of tourists like us)
I advise you to leave quite early if you want to enjoy your day on site. From Toronto around 8 am, you can take during breakfast 'on the train, it's not too expensive and it's pretty good.
Arrived at the station in Niagara, the easiest way is probably to take a taxi to the site of the falls itself. It takes about $ 15 for the trip, but it will save you a good walk. Once there, there has to open wide their eyes and enjoy!
The city of Niagara saw the exploitation of falls and tourism linked to it. The landscape may seem denature by casinos, hotels and other buildings for you to consume. This is obviously not the part I like, but I imagine that this commercial use falls sustains many people ... And rest assured, when we are facing the falls, we do not see these buildings that we turns back
Several attractions are proposed to discover the falls "closer." The main and best known is the "Maid of the Mist", the famous boat that takes you to the foot of the different falls (Horseshoe Falls and American Falls for those who have not followed) from the mid-nineteenth century
It takes at least $ 20 per adult to board the boat. Before boarding, we will provide you with a beautiful blue bag (as you can see, everybody wears something blue on board) which serves here as a raincoat, and that will be very useful later.
Indeed, the boat takes you near the falls, the American Falls and Horseshoe Falls where the impressive blue bag makes sense, before returning to the American Falls for the return.
Journey Behind The Falls
The "Journey Behind the Falls" is the only way to get to the falls throughout the year as the boat does not work during the winter months! The price is the same as for the boat ... And again, for this price, the plastic bag (yellow this time) is available!
This time, a lift takes you to the base of the falls (the Horseshoe Falls alone) that a small terrace has been built on the cliff side. No time limit here, you can enjoy the view as long as you wish. A long tunnel also allows you to get behind the falls, two openings are right on the water curtain where we take the measure of the power of the falls!
