Barcelone's Magical Fountain
During the Great Universal Exhibition of 1929, the organizers felt that something was missing, something spectacular, something that could be the symbol of the Catalan capital for generations to come. It is for this reason that Carles Buigas returned to Barcelona to present his project, "a colossal work, bold and very dear." The committee was surprised by the immensity of the project and they rejected the idea almost thinking it would be impossible to carry out. Fortunately, Buigas could convince her by saying that he would project to completion in less than a year with the help of more than 3,000 workers.
One of the most popular tourist attractions and one of the most beautiful fountains in the world, with the Fontana di Trevi in Rome and the Fountains of Bellagio in Las Vegas, has been created.
Unfortunately, with the Civil War and the period of post-war, the fountain has deteriorated for lack of maintenance, and it stopped working between 1955 and 1970, but fortunately for the locals and tourists, the fountain was restored and rehabilitated in 1976 and restored for the 1992 Olympic Games again, becoming the famous symbol of Barcelona.
Lights and Music
People will see the massive 3620 fountains that spring at a height of 54 meters. These are the jets of all colors dancing every weekend during the famous show of music and lights when the lighting technology combines with the music. Although for some, the idea of sitting in front of a fountain watching the crescendo of lights accompanied by the crescendo of music may not seem like the most fun thing in the world, yet it is a real charming and mesmerizing.
The schedules of these shows change seasonally. In summer (May to September), they are held from 20:00 to 23:00 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In winter (October to April), the spectacle of the fountain is on Friday and Saturday from 19:00 to 21:00. The show takes place every half hour and everyone can have the opportunity to enjoy. Multitudes of people, especially young families are returning every night, so it is better to get there early enough to choose the best location - the walls and stairs that surround it are the best places!
If you are in Barcelona at the end of the summer, try to see the `Piromusical'. It really is a feast for the eyes as a large fireworks display with synchronized music to celebrate the Festival of La Merce (the patron saint of Barcelona, September 24).
The Place
Not only the music and the lights are dazzling, Montjuic in itself is impressive.
The fountain is in front of the Palau Nacional de Montjuïc, which in itself is an attraction, not to mention the Plaça d'Espanya with its false Venetian towers 47 meters high. So it just does not miss to visit the Magic Fountain of Montjuic during your stay in Barcelona, and the music and the lights are a relaxing way to start or end an evening that will amaze you. And even better, it's free!
To get to the fountain, take the red or green line subway (metro or subway) to Plaça d'Espanya and reassemble Avinguda Reina Maria Cristina to the top.
Note that the Magic Fountain is closed for four to six weeks during the winter months due to maintenance, usually from mid-January to mid-February. Always check the official opening hours as they change.
